Liberal Catholics: It’s Time to Quit the Catholic Church

Today the Freedom From Religion Foundation ran the following full-page ad in the New York Times:

The letter encourages liberal Catholics to leave the Church, citing its numerous damaging anti-women stances. It makes the point that though you may believe in women’s rights, you are giving your time, money, and support to an organization devoted to inflicting its medieval and misogynist “morality” on everyone (including non-Catholics). I can’t put it any better than the letter itself, so I would encourage everyone to click above for a full-size version to read.

Although I’m not a fan of Bill Maher, I’m reminded of a quote of his from Religulous:

If you belonged to a political party or a social club that was tied to as much bigotry, misogyny, homophobia, violence, and sheer ignorance as religion is, you’d resign in protest. To do otherwise is to be an enabler, a mafia wife, for the true devils of extremism that draw their legitimacy from the billions of their fellow travelers.

One Response to Liberal Catholics: It’s Time to Quit the Catholic Church

  1. By staying in the church, playing for choirs, and getting paid I’m taking money from the church that would it would otherwise use to pay for its intolerance, so really I’m helping the cause.
