Stromae is my thought-provoking summer jam

Back in college when I first heard Yelle, I steeped myself in her music for longer than I care to think about. My love for Yelle’s music is still strong, but I’ve been in a pretty folk/bluegrassy mood so far this summer, thanks in no small part to seeing Lake Street Dive and River Whyless in concert a couple months ago. Well, this morning I was browsing an AskReddit thread about people’s favorite non-English songs, and someone posted “Papaoutai” by Stromae, a Belgian rapper/singer/songwriter. Now it looks like I’m headed for a summer of French pop music.

The catchy beat and pastel waxwork look of the video pulled me in right away, but by the time the kid was rapping angrily at his father, the story had me. I don’t understand a word of what he’s saying, but I was choked up by the end of the video nonetheless.

A little farther down in the thread, someone posted the video for “Tous Les Mêmes.” I LOVE this video. The Victor, Victoria feel, the brilliant camera moves and lighting changes, and the catchy but provocative message combine into something wonderful.

What’s your summer jam? I’m always on the lookout for new music.
